It seems that IO Interactive’s vision of the world of James Bond in 007 First Light was going to be quite different at first. While the game as it currently stands focuses solely on Mr. Bond, there was once the idea of making it a sort of ensemble cast, in which he would have worked with a number of Double-O agents during his missions. Spoilers ahead!
There’s an early section of the game in which Bond takes part in a training montage, a part of the game that went over quite well with many who played it. But, as lead author Michael Vogt said Eurogamer in a recent interview, “During the training sequence, we make a false promise. Basically, we say it will be an ensemble piece, all the double O’s working together, like they do in Slovakia.
“And then we pull the rug out from under you when most of them die, and by chance, (Bond) is the last man standing. He could have died in that explosion but he didn’t, and so he comes across as the better agent. But in my very first argument, I think we were actually playing with the idea of making it an ensemble piece, of the different agents working together.”
It’s been seven years since the first pitch took place, so Vogt apparently doesn’t know exactly when that changed, but he was able to explain why. According to him, it’s because it’s a time when we move from “fun and play” to something more serious. “After that explosion, he wakes up to a harsher reality. When M says life expectancy is very short, he’s like, ‘Oh, that’s true.’ He understands. And he matures from that, of course, and also from the guilt – perhaps the survivor’s guilt – of being the one who succeeded. »
Mark was generally rather positive about Bond’s relationship with his fellow double-Os in his review of the game, although he noted its breakneck pace.
