Beijing’s Hong Kong affairs official called on lawmakers to better support the city’s leader, strengthen governance, inject new impetus into local development and meet residents’ needs.
In his meeting with the group in the Hong Kong Hall of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xia reiterated the work of the Legislative Council and encouraged members to “intensify their learning, strengthen unity and continue to diligently perform their duties,” according to a press release from the Legislative Council.
Xia also urged the Legislative Council to “play a greater role in supporting the Chief Executive and (the government) in running Hong Kong in accordance with the law, so as to enhance the effectiveness of (the city’s) governance, inject new impetus into the city’s growth and address the most pressing concerns of the people.”
Xia’s deputies, Xu Zhifang, Zhu Jie, Zhang Dongmei, and Nong Rong, also attended the symposium. Chu also serves as Director of the Liaison Office of the Central Government in Hong Kong.
