West Ham have moved, at least temporarily, to the top of the league championship As they were on their way to an emphatic 6-0 win over Wrexham.
The Hammers went into the game on the back of three straight wins, with that run helping Nuno Espirito Santo’s men put their early season struggles behind them as they bid for an immediate return to the Premier League.
And once Jarrod Bowen put West Ham ahead in the 28th minute, there was no doubt they would extend that streak to four games.
Captain Bowen brilliantly headed home at the near post from Morato’s low ball from the left.
Nine minutes later it was 2-0 when Joel Piro fired into the roof of the net from a pass from Tati Castellanos after the Argentine beat Wrexham’s offside trap.
Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home to make it 3-0 three minutes into the second half, and Castellanos then put the game beyond doubt by slotting home the bottom left corner at the end of a quick counter-attack.
Muhammadu Kante turned the game into a rout when he brilliantly controlled Manor Solomon’s pass and scored the fifth goal, and Solomon then capped off West Ham’s best performance of the season when he hit the post from the edge of the area.
West Ham is one point behind West Bromwich, who will face Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, at the top. Wrexham, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, have managed just one win from their first seven matches.
