Hong Kong aims to expand its tech ecosystem and nurture more startups: HKSTP CEO G trends

Hong Kong is stepping up efforts to attract technology startups and nurture startups through expanded financial support via a major government-backed platform, leveraging the city’s thriving fundraising activities and world-class financial infrastructure.

Investors are showing an increased appetite for the local tech scene compared to a decade ago – a trend that Terry Wong Ping Sau, CEO of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP), said is a positive sign for the city’s broader innovation and technology ecosystem.

“Traditional companies and family offices, in particular, are showing great enthusiasm, driven by the transformation needs of the next generation taking over family businesses in Hong Kong that have traditionally run traditional operations,” Wong told the South China Morning Post. “Many people are actively reaching out to us.

“As the hub of the ecosystem, we can provide them with insights into IT and technology developments and offer diverse investment opportunities.”

Compared to Hong Kong Prowess in fundraising – The city helped companies raise about HK$285.8 billion (US$36.4 billion) through new listings last year – and Wong noted that there is still room for improvement in early-stage financing.

HKSTP was established in 2001 as a statutory body to promote the IT and technology ecosystem by connecting stakeholders, nurturing talent and providing facilities for research and development.
