Atletico Madrid continued their strong start to the season without Julian Alvarez to record an easy 3-1 win at hosts Sevilla.
Alvarez was not in the squad for the trip to Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with the Argentine forward missing training this week as Atletico continue to stand firm in challenging his desire to join Barcelona.
His absence did not matter as Atletico scored three goals in the first half to take complete control of the match, as Alex Baena finished the ball at the near post after a wonderful team move to open the scoring in the fourth minute.
Ademola Lookman doubled the lead with a brilliant right-footed shot into the bottom left corner and Baena then found the same spot for his second.
Miguel Sierra pulled one back for Sevilla but that was little more than a consolation. Atletico win Moves them to the top of the Spanish LeagueAt least temporarily with seven points from three matches.
Elsewhere, Levante thrashed Real Betis 5-2 for their first win of the season, and Real Sociedad exited the race with a 2-1 win over Espanyol.
Dortmund makes a winning start, and Elversberg stuns Leverkusen
Borussia Dortmund started their Bundesliga campaign with a 2-0 win over Hamburg despite finishing the match with ten men.
Serho Guirassi and an own goal from Sebastien Bornau put Dortmund ahead, and they managed to survive the final 13 minutes plus stoppage time after 18-year-old Samuel Inacio was shown a straight card for a horrific challenge just three minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Elversberg made their Bundesliga debut with a stunning 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen. The newly promoted side took a 2-0 lead inside nine minutes through Lucas Petkov and Cole Campbell before David Makwa Ntoso made it 3-0 early in the second half.
Patrik Schick and Christian Covanni unnerved the home team as Leverkusen threatened to make a comeback, but Elversberg held on to secure a memorable win.
Christopher Nkunku celebrated his return to RB Leipzig with an assist in the opening 3-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Eintracht Frankfurt squandered a 3-1 lead after drawing 3-3 with Union Berlin, while Thes Dalinga scored twice for Cologne to come back from 2-1 down to beat Hoffenheim 3-2. Mainz tied 0-0 with newly promoted Paderborn.
Two out of two for Juve
Juventus achieved two wins from two matches in the Italian League, beating Parma 2-0.
Nicolas Gonzalez gave Juventus the lead with a deflected shot on the hour mark, and Teon Koopmeineers then secured the points late on when he fired into the bottom right corner after Manuel Locatelli’s clever pass.
Torino, Juventus’ city rival, lost to Sassuolo 2-1, while newly promoted Frosinone achieved its first victory by defeating Fiorentina 3-0 in Florence.
But Monza, his new teammate, suffered another defeat, losing 3-2 at home to unbeaten Udinese.
Strasbourg fights to beat Lens
Lens suffered a shock defeat to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 despite Florian Thauvin giving them the lead with his 100th Ligue 1 goal. Jassim Yassin scored two goals to turn the match upside down and give Strasbourg its first victory.
Lyon failed to end the week that saw them exit the Champions League with a win, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Le Havre. Luis Obinda saved a point for Lyon three minutes from time, although they were lucky to hold on for the equalizer as Sota Nakamura saw Havre’s winner in stoppage time disallowed for handball.
In other matches, Angers defeated Auxerre 3-1, Troyes defeated Lorient 2-1, and Brest and Toulouse tied 2-2.
