A delighted Roberto De Zerbi praised Tottenham as a “very good team” after recording their first win Premier League Winning the season by defeating Coventry City 3-1.
Tottenham started the season without a win in six league matches, but James Maddison’s goal in his first match since May last year put the team on the path to victory.
Jack Rodoni equalized four minutes after the start of the second half. However, Omar Marmoush’s first goal for Tottenham and Ben Davies’ stoppage-time strike secured the win that lifted Tottenham out of the relegation zone.
De Zerbe has previously publicly criticized his team amid their struggles, citing mental issues.
However, he expressed his appreciation for his players after their long-awaited victory.
De Zerbe told Sky Sports: “I am happy with the result, the behavior, the spirit and the reaction after the goal we conceded.”
“Honestly, we didn’t play as well as the last matches. But now they deserve credit for our responsibility because they defended very well and composed.
“Now we have to understand that we can win because after two or three seasons like this, the mental aspect is crucial.
“We have to thank the fans, especially in the last part of the match, they were amazing, they suffered a lot.
He added: “We have to put pressure, we have to improve the quality of play of course, but we are a good team, a very good team.”
Coventry failed to register a third successive win, but coach Frank Lampard still sees positive reasons.
“In the first half I thought we were really good,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “It’s hard to say after a 3-1 defeat.”
“I think the last goal was a clear mistake. I think it distorts the image of the match.
“I think the players showed belief in the way they were playing, and we were a threat until the end. When you think about where we are, we are out of the tournament. I think we took the lead in that first period of games.
“We faced a complete team. Eight of the players who started played for us last year in the Championship. I think they showed real character in the way they played.
“The last goal changes the feeling a little bit, but it shouldn’t be that way in terms of how we performed.”
