“A lot of things happened today. They were much better than us in the first half and we were much better in the second half,” Airola said.

“When we were under pressure, we responded well. When we relaxed, we made mistakes. You can’t relax against a very good opponent. I appreciate the win.”

“We have to know that if we don’t reach the maximum, it will be difficult. We are facing very good teams. It is good to be back but we are starting to give up a lot of goals this season.”

Iraola praises Rio Ngomoha’s development

One positive for Liverpool has been the performance of 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who continues to earn chances under Irola and scored twice on Tuesday night.

“I’m really happy with Rio. He’s trying to improve everything we’re trying to correct,” Airola said.

“He plays a lot on the right flank and he’s adapted really well. He’s going more inside. He struggled defensively in the first half, and the second half was much better. He’s become a more complete player. He’s still only 18.”
