Along with God of War Laufey’s release date reveal at San Diego Comic Con, it was also confirmed that Kratos would return as the film’s main character. following game in the series.
This was confirmed by Cory Barlog, head of creative at Sony Santa Monica, during the SDCC panel for Laufey.
During the panel, Barlog said: “Everything we do in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and aims to set up and expand on what comes next. Phranque has been there from the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world. Everything in the game is gearing up for something this incredible.”
Barlog was talking about how God of War Laufey’s goal was to further expand the universe, and you can certainly see this as a direct way to bring Kratos into contact with a wider variety of mythologies and divine pantheons in a more fluid way.
The original Kratos trilogy (and a few spin-offs and prequels) all dealt with the pantheon and Greek mythology, and it was a difficult pivot for Kratos to suddenly live in the icy north and deal with the Norse gods for the 2018 series reboot. Many story points and arcs have now been closed off in God of War Ragnarok, but God of War Laufey will run concurrently and feature Kratos’ wife in his afterlife of the gods, after being cremated early in the 2018 game. In the track revealed in June, Faye quickly comes face to face with Sekmet from the Egyptian pantheon of gods, and Begtse, the god of war from Tibetan mythology, befriends a talking gelatinous cube called Phranque and the ribbons of a sword called Rue. These two characters become Laufey’s allies as she seeks to restore her own powers, understand what is happening, and return to Kratos and Atreus.
God of War Laufey will be the last new game in the series to be released on physical media.
