A Jon Snow series has to be more than beyond the wall
Kit Harington didn’t fully reveal the inner workings of the Jon Snow series, but ultimately felt like it wasn’t the right time for the story. Although he still believes there is a world in which such a show could exist, he also insists that he doesn’t want the project to move forward if it doesn’t work. This speaks volumes about what the glaring problem with a show like this could be.
Jon Snow’s character arc is completely cyclical game of Thrones. Despite being of royal descent and the type of person who was practically groomed for command, he ends up right back where he started. Instead of rejoining the Night’s Watch, he joins Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) beyond the Wall to experience the first taste of true freedom he ever had. It is unfortunate that this freedom takes place in a cold tundra.
Jon Snow’s future prospects are as bleak as those around him. Creating an exciting series that would be a worthy successor game of Thrones, Jon’s story would have to be more than just his adventures beyond the Wall. While not proven, this may have been the biggest problem in developing a Jon Snow series.
The Targaryen descendant was backed into a corner from which he would have difficulty getting out. The most obvious solution would be to take Jon back to Westeros in a way that makes up for a character arc that essentially went nowhere. However, as Harington noted, if the concept for such a series isn’t there, it might be better to leave it alone entirely.
While most viewers probably couldn’t imagine that Jon would face such a dark ending, with the Starks separated from each other once again, he relented Jon feels the first sense of peace he has felt since birth. He was caught up in a conspiracy over which he had no control and had to endure bullying and abuse from a potential mother figure, as well as lies from everyone he trusted.
Learning the truth about his heritage never gave him the comfort he needed. Leaving the fight for the Iron Throne may be the only way for Jon to get what he deserves. Then again, perhaps fans just want to see him take over his birthright over the Seven Kingdoms.
