The five free Meta Quest games that are actually worth your storage space in 2026 are Gorilla label, And, Games room, Gymnastics classes and that of Meta First steps And First meetings. All the rest of the free maps should be read carefully before installing, and a good portion should not be installed at all.
This last point is worth stating clearly, as most “best free quest games” lists ignore it. The free section of the Meta Horizon Store in 2026 is dominated by Gorilla Tag derivatives, and the duplication is remarkable: the top sixty free games in terms of rating volume include at least five almost identical ones. Deadly Monkey starters, alongside Scary Baboon, Scary primates, Monkey Doo, Alien Monkey and several others. Big scary appears alone under four almost duplicate lists.
Some of them are competent. Most are not. A long tail of them are rated 13+ while looking indistinguishable from the original 0+, which poses a problem if you install it on a child’s helmet. Check the developer name before downloading, not just the thumbnail.
That said, here are the five that hold up.

1. Gorilla label
Promoter: Another axiom Note : 0+ · Multiplayer · Moderate comfort
This remains the best argument that a good idea beats a big budget. You’re a gorilla with no legs and no controller controls beyond your arms – you move around by physically pushing off the ground and trees with your hands, and you play tag. That’s the whole game.
Locomotion is the reason he has 175,000 ratings at 4.4 and a whole genre of imitators. It’s skill-based like almost nothing else in VR: good players move through a map at a speed that seems impossible until you’ve practiced it, and the learning curve falls entirely on your shoulders rather than in a menu. It’s also, by the way, a grueling workout.
Another Axiom updates it every two weeks since 2022.
Two caveats. The first is voice chat: the 0+ rating describes the content accurately, but the game is public lobbies full of strangers, and on an adult account the chat is open and unmoderated. If this is happening on a child’s headset, create a parent-managed account first – our parental controls guide covers this.
The second is money. Cosmetic packs for this free-to-play game range from around £25 to £45, which is a striking amount to ask for in a product with a player base as young as this one.

2. AND
Promoter: ContinuumXR · Note : 10+ · Multiplayer · Early Access
The greatest free quest story since Gorilla Tag itself. Released in August 2025, UG has accumulated 395,000 store ratings at 4.9 — the highest volume of any free game on the platform, and an average that most paid titles never reach.
You hatch dinosaurs, raise them, ride them and trade them, in a world shared with other players. It borrows its movement from the Gorilla Tag school of physical locomotion and wraps it in a pickup loop that is, judging by these numbers, extremely effective on the audience it’s aimed at.
It remains in early access and sells currencies and bundles between £15 and £30. Treat it accordingly, but it’s the free game more likely to keep a player around for months rather than an evening.

3. Games room
Promoter: Games Room Inc · Note : 10+ · Freemium · Comfortable
Less of a game than a platform, and after nine years still the most complete social space on Quest. Paintball, disc golf, dodgeball, quests, and a huge library of rooms built by other players – plus creation tools good enough for a determined teenager to build something truly impressive.
It is also the platform that takes child safety most seriously. On a junior account, voice and text chat are completely disabled, usernames are auto-generated so a child can’t accidentally broadcast their name, and content from the 13+ community is blocked. For adult accounts, there’s real-time voice moderation, automatic text filtering in public spaces, an ignore bubble for avatars that invade you, and the usual blocking and reporting tools.
One thing for parents: junior accounts are automatically converted on the child’s thirteenth birthday and the protections disappear without prompting.

4. Gymnastics class
Promoter: IRL Studios · Note : 0+ · Multiplayer · Comfortable
The best basketball in VR, free, and one of the few titles here that dates back to the original Quest.
The shooting pattern is what sells it. Gym Class gets the arc and trigger correct, so a jump shot feels like a jump shot rather than a move the game has agreed to interpret. Pickup games fill up quickly and have since expanded well beyond basketball to include boxing, football, baseball and paintball.
NBA and MLB licensed content is sold as paid packages and an internet connection is required. The free game below is over.

5. First steps and first meetings
Promoter: Meta · Note : 0+ · Single player, offline, no in-app purchases
Meta’s own pair, and the only entries on this list with no multiplayer, no chat, no purchases, and no internet requirements.
First steps is the controller tutorial and remains the best twenty minutes a new player can have. You open drawers, throw paper airplanes, dance with a robot, and learn to grip and trigger without being taught.
First meetingson Quest 3 and 3S only, scans your room then punches holes in your real walls so fluffy aliens can flock to your living room. This is the clearest demonstration of mixed reality ever, and it takes about twenty minutes.
Both exist to sell headsets, making them completely free of the monetization that shapes everything else on this page. Charge them first.

Also free, upon reservation
POPULATION: ONE – a battle royale from BigBox VR, now owned by Meta. Rated 13+, competent and the most conventional shooter on the free list.
Animal Company – 216,000 ratings at 4.8, near the top of the charts, and the game most likely to be installed by a parent who assumes that cartoon animals are a kid’s game. It’s rated 13+, still in early access, features open multiplayer, and sells character packs for up to around £50.
VRChat – the most talked about free VR app and the one we would be most wary of. Rated 13+, and the only title here bearing the store’s intense comfort rating. Its store average of 3.6 is the lowest of all major free titles. A 2022 BBC investigation, in which a researcher used an account registered as a 13-year-old, documented grooming and abuse inside. This report is now four years old, but nothing comparable has been published since then to replace it. We cover the big picture in our parents’ guide to Quest safety.
The one that got away
Meta Horizon Worlds was removed from the Quest Store on March 31, 2026.and it’s still recommended on many older lists.
The story behind it is worth knowing. Meta had announced a complete shutdown of virtual reality for June 15, 2026, before CTO Andrew Bosworth reversed the decision on March 19, saying the company would “continue” Horizon Worlds working in VR for existing games to support fans.
The result is a strange halfway house: old VR worlds remain playable for the foreseeable future, but no new VR worlds can be created, development has moved to mobile and the new Horizon Engine, and Horizon Central, Events Arena, Kaiju, and Bobber Bay are no longer accessible in VR. This is not a thing to use now.
If you prefer to pay a little
Meta Horizon+ – renamed Meta Quest+ – is the alternative to trawling for free maps. It offers you two recoverable games per month, a rotating catalog of more than a hundred titles in its main and independent libraries, discounts for subscribers and since July 2026 an Xbox Game Pass benefit offering a monthly allocation of cloud gaming on a selection of Xbox titles.
Retail codes run to £19.99 for three months, £39.99 for six and £59.99 for twelvewith a free month trial for new subscribers. The monthly September games are Warplanes: Air Corp And VR Prison Chief.
Since a single paid Quest game often costs more than three months, this is the best first expense for anyone with a new headset.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free game on Meta Quest?
Gorilla Tag, for its physical locomotion and its 175,000 ratings in store, even if UG surpassed it in volume with 395,000 ratings at 4.9. For a completely safe first session, without multiplayer or purchases, the first steps and first encounters of Meta are the best starting point.
Are free Quest games safe for kids?
Most need care. The majority of popular free-to-play titles are multiplayer social games with open voice chat, and several that resemble children’s games are rated 13+. Create a parent-managed account before installing any of these. The first steps and first meetings are the exceptions: solo, offline, without purchases.
Why are there so many similar free games on the Quest store?
The success of Gorilla Tag has produced a vast ecosystem of imitators using the same arm-based locomotion. The top sixty free titles by rating volume include several nearly identical entries under variations of the same name. The quality varies greatly and some are rated 13+ although they look like the original 0+.
Is Meta Horizon Worlds still available?
It was removed from the Quest Store on March 31, 2026. Meta had planned a complete VR shutdown in June 2026, but canceled it in March, so existing worlds remain playable for the time being. No new VR worlds can be created and development has shifted to mobile.
What does Meta Horizon+ cost?
Retail codes cost £19.99 for three months, £39.99 for six months and £59.99 for twelve, with one month free for new subscribers. It includes two games redeemable each month, a catalog of over a hundred titles, discounts for subscribers and an Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming benefit added in July 2026.
