Officials in northwest Ireland say they are working to recover a large Canadian buoy that floated across the Atlantic Ocean and washed up on a coastal island.
A press release from Mayo County Council said the sea mark, which weighs about 3.5 tons, came ashore on Achill Island, known for its rugged mountains and bright sandy beaches.

She says the Canadian Coast Guard told the council that its buoys, while “very friendly,” have a habit of drifting away from home.
The council is looking to recover the buoy to prevent it from floating away and becoming a danger to ships or coastal infrastructure.
The unusual visitor to the island could carry a navigational light and emit a distinctive powered beeping sound to alert nearby ships, the release says.
The council adds that the discovery is a playful reminder of Mayo’s relationship with Canada over generations of immigration, before demanding a fraction of the ransom.
“If Canadians want to see their floats again, they may have to make a special trip to May to collect them,” the statement said.
