Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said he left Enzo Fernandes out of the squad to face Luton because he had to do “what’s best for the team”.
Alonso said in the lead-up to the Carabao Cup match that he expected Fernandes to play.
Last Friday, Chelsea set a deadline for Manchester City to sign the Argentine international. However, they are still said to be open to selling if they receive at least £120m and are able to sign a replacement.
But surprisingly the midfielder was not involved as Alonso fielded a strong side against top-flight opposition.
“We are evaluating what is best for the team individually and collectively,” Alonso said. “We have made this decision.
“It was a decision made by me and the club. It was just because of today’s game and we needed the players to get minutes.”
Fernandes was a second-half substitute as Alonso’s men kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 3-2 win over west London rivals Fulham on Monday.
Chelsea have also been linked with the signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez before Tuesday’s deadline.
Alonso was not withdrawn but he dropped Robert Sanchez in the cup match with Mike Penders making his debut.
“I like to talk about players in the locker room. It’s not respectful to talk about other things,” Alonso said.
“We are happy with the team we have. I have always said that we need to be aware of situations. In this period, we can make decisions. Let’s see what happens.”
