The Atletico Madrid board has given its unanimous support to the decision not to negotiate the sale of Julian Alvarez to Barcelona.
Alvarez is under contract at the Metropolitano until 2030, but he expressed his desire to fulfill his “dream” of moving to Camp Nou.
The Argentine striker was booed and walked straight down the tunnel in Atletico’s opening La Liga match, a 2-2 draw with Villarreal, after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Alvarez missed training on Wednesday due to illness, as Atletico responded to Joan Laporta’s comments, with the Barcelona president saying the club maintained its interest in the former Manchester City star due to the suggestion that the Rojiblancos would be willing to sell to Arsenal.
In response, Atletico said there was a “0%” chance of Alvarez being sold to Barcelona.
And in A Statement issued on ThursdayThe club announced that its board of directors fully supports this position.
The statement read: “The members of the Atletico Madrid board of directors unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club’s decision not to negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona.”
“The members of the Board of Directors acknowledge that Atlético Madrid is open to standard transfer market negotiations when conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner. We fully support the position previously stated by the club that FC Barcelona has failed to meet these requirements and, as a result, there will be no negotiations and there is no consideration of a transfer of Alvarez to Barcelona.
He added: “Atletico Madrid is confident that our player will understand the decision and will remain focused on helping the club achieve its goals, just as he did during the two seasons in which he defended our colors.”
