Canada and the Philippines today signed agreements on energy, natural resources, labor and tourism during a high-level visit in Vancouver.
Prime Minister Mark Carney received Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Canada, marking the first visit by a head of state in more than a decade.

Carney says Filipino-Canadians are “at the heart” of Canada, and both countries can benefit from energy security and critical minerals through a strategic partnership.
Marcos’ visit demonstrates that Canada’s four-year-old Indo-Pacific strategy is beginning to bear fruit, Asia Pacific Foundation Vice President Veena Nadjibula wrote in her analysis.
She says Carney has visited leaders abroad, but their coming to Canada shows real interest, especially since the Philippines is working with Ottawa on trade, maritime surveillance and energy.
Canada is currently negotiating a trade agreement with both the Philippines and a broader bloc of Southeast Asian countries, and Carney hopes to conclude those talks before his visit to Manila in November.
