FIFA held a touching tribute to the late South African player in front of 60,000 football fans Jayden Adams after his shocking death at the age of 25.
On Saturday, July 11th, the World Cup quarterfinal match between England and Norway took place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida a moment of silence on behalf of Adams. The emotional tribute saw the Norway and England teams stand at opposite ends of the pitch as the capacity crowd stood silently and respectfully in front of Adams.
Earlier in the day, a spokesman for the South African Football Players Union confirmed that Adams – a midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana – had died unexpectedly.
“Jayden had recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the nation’s hopes with pride, courage and distinction,” the organization said. “His death is an immeasurable loss for his family, his teammates, clubs, the football community and the country as a whole.”

He also came on as a substitute in South Africa’s 1-0 win against South Korea, but was not used in the national team’s 1-0 loss to Canada. (The loss on June 28 at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood resulted in Canada knocking South Africa out of the World Cup in the round of 16.)
Gayton McKenzieSouth Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture said Saturday that investigators had not yet determined the cause of Adams’ death. The minister promised that further information about the circumstances of Adam’s death in Cape Town will be released to the public as the investigation continues.
After Adams’ death, his long-time partner and mother of his 5-year-old daughter, Aqueelah AdendorfShe broke her silence in a powerful social media post.
“There are no words to describe the pain I feel,” Adendorf wrote via Instagram on Saturday. “Rest in peace, my love. Thank you for every memory, every laugh, every hug and every moment we shared. You were not only the love of my life, but also my biggest supporter and my best friend.”
She continued, “A part of my heart remains with you, and I will carry your love with me forever. Until we meet again, I will miss you every day. Be calm, my friend. I love you always and forever.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino He paid respect to Adams’ “family, friends and teammates” in his own statement.
“It is so incredibly sad to hear that South African midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after playing in his country’s historic FIFA World Cup,” Infantino, 56, said on Saturday. “My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of all members of FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace.”
