Total War: Warhammer 40,000 feels like one of those games where you’re like, “wait, how does this not already exist?” There have been previous Total War: Warhammer games, three of them in fact, but all of them take place in the original fantasy setting, not some far-out futuristic sci-fi. We still don’t know when Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will be released, although they have shared one thing that will be different compared to previous Warhammer games: they have no plans for sequels.
Talk to Pee Cee GaemurrBattle product owner Dave Petry explained that instead of creating multiple entries of a Warhammer 40,000 game, they would simply continue to update the one they are currently creating because “it seemed like the right thing to do, and it’s such a huge galaxy to fill.” He explained: “We’re going to have major releases, we’re going to update this game with major items of different sizes, but we’re looking at what Total War is and things like Immortal Empires.”
“Like the real experience is the sandbox. That’s what we want to build on, and that’s what we want to continue to build on, and bring that together in one place so that there are as many different ways that players can come in and continue to experience the whole thing without being siphoned off and only experiencing part of it. We just felt like that was super super important, and it also puts us in a position to build better together, and work on the same thing in the same space with the same problems, and to continue to do it better together with everyone.”
Basically, I hope you’re happy to be a part of this one for the long haul! And if you’re desperate for a sequel before the first one even comes out, maybe re-evaluate your priorities in life. In addition to sharing the lack of sequel plans, a small preview of what to expect was also detailed. The game will start with four customizable factions, the ever-present Space Marines, Aeldari, Ork and Astra Militarum. In the future, other Space Marine chapters are planned, such as Space Wolves, and Genestealers and Chaos Space Marines are also potential options.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently scheduled for release in 2027, and you can get it on Steam here.
