Thomas Ware Bowen II, 51, was sentenced to three years of supervised release and banned from traveling abroad during that period, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. He also used the alias Tom McGregor. His father, Thomas Pawkin, headed the Texas Republican Party in the 1990s and later ran for governor.
Baukin has been detained since his arrest in February, and admitted in June to acting as a Chinese agent in the United States without notifying the prosecutor, as required by federal law.
He recruited potential intelligence assets, issued missions, sent reports to MSS contacts, received at least US$100,000, and made several trips from China to the United States to meet with people who could provide information to him and, ultimately, to Chinese intelligence, the office added.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg said in a statement that Pawkin “betrayed his country for money” and “exploited his American citizenship and corresponding ability to travel to the United States without restrictions.”
