As you may have seen, there was another alleged GTA 6 leak yesterday, with apparent footage of Rockstar’s criminal sandbox in action spreading across the net and, in many cases, quickly hit with DMCA takedowns. The group apparently behind the leak this time claimed that their motivations were linked to combating publishers’ anti-consumer practices, prompting the Stop Killing Games campaign to step in and issue a statement condemning and distancing itself from the piracy.
If you’re not aware, the hackers are called Cyberleek and released a manifesto after making their escape. In it, they reportedly raged against digital pre-orders, single-player DLC that is already part of the base game but closed, and demanded that single-player games be given an “offline fallback state” so they can continue if the servers are down. The hackers claim to combat this bad corporate behavior through a secret project. They also used the leak to promote the cryptocurrency in the form of a memecoin, which certainly doesn’t immediately cast serious doubt on their stated benevolent intentions.
Given that Cyberleek’s manifesto addresses a number of similar points to those that the Stop Killing Games campaign has insisted should be addressed via new laws aimed at game publishers, it’s no surprise that they felt the need to distance themselves and the pirates.
“Do not send your money to these people, no matter how much you sympathize with their actions,” Stop Killing Games wrote in a statement posted on social media. “This is illegal, and frankly, we think everyone at Rockstar needs to go through this ordeal again, especially just over a week before Rockstar’s official premiere, ‘Extended Look.’ Using illegal means to make a point is unacceptable to us and does nothing to protect our right to continue using what we paid for. No matter how much you disagree with the decisions of these companies’ upper management, there are still thousands of developers who have worked hard on this project – and they are the ones who are hit the hardest.”

“Instead, channel that frustration into something constructive,” they continued. “This kind of act is destructive and helps no one. Worse still, it risks tarnishing the reputation of our communities and our chances of changing things. History is not on the side of the leakers either: the last person who did this at Rockstar, in 2022, ended up with a hospitalization order for an indefinite period. This is not a cause worth risking your money or future for (we seriously doubt that the hack was seriously motivated by this reason).”
As with the latest GTA 6 hack cited by SKG, there’s a good chance this one won’t benefit anyone in the long run. People might see that GTA 6 does indeed feel like a sixth GTA game slightly earlier than they otherwise would have. Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two will take whatever action they deem appropriate against hackers. Developers working on GTA 6 will have to endure additional stress before release. Hackers, in the very small chance that their pro-consumer ideals turn out not to be trolling or hot air, are unlikely to succeed in threatening publishers into changing course. The only people who will likely benefit will be the lawyers who are hired to oversee any resulting legal action. Honestly, even lawyers everywhere are probably sick of dramatic GTA 6 leaks at this point.
Hopefully Stop Killing Games’ legal efforts to achieve their goals are not hindered. Rockstar, meanwhile, insisted the layoffs were due to “confidential information” disclosed via “a public forum.”
