English club Newcastle United announced the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.
The Magpies have made Gonzalez their seventh summer signing, paying an initial £48m to City, with a deal including a further £4m in potential add-ons.
After completing a medical on Tyneside on Wednesday, Gonzalez’s signing was announced ahead of their UEFA Cup tie with West Brom.
Gonzalez is expected to move directly to Newcastle Premier League To face Tottenham in north London on Saturday.

“I really love the black and white shirt and I can’t wait to wear it on the pitch for this club.
“I’ve experienced playing at St James’ Park twice with Manchester City and it was really tough. The atmosphere was amazing and the fans are so excited. I can’t wait to experience it as a player at home.”
Head coach Matthias Geisel said: “I’m very happy to see Nico become a Newcastle United player. He brings high quality and elite experience to a key area of the pitch.
“Nico is a really strong ball-carrier – someone who can move the team forward while maintaining his composure under pressure. He also brings discipline defensively, reads the game well and his physicality makes him a perfect fit for the Premier League.
“Nico is a proven winner who has already played for some top clubs in Europe’s top leagues, but he is also still young and hungry to develop further. He is a great addition to our squad.”
The 24-year-old made 59 appearances in all competitions for City after joining from Porto in 2025. He scored four goals, including the stunning winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton last season.
Now he will become the leader of Newcastle’s midfield, which has undergone major changes this summer.
Gonzalez appointed to a crucial role in Newcastle’s midfield
The arrival of the former Barcelona midfielder is the most important of the transfer window for Newcastle, as his signing helped fill the void left by former captain Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, who left for Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.
He is the third midfielder to join Newcastle this summer, joining 18-year-old Sean Stewart and 20-year-old Aladeji Bamba.
Academy product Louis Miley is a rising star who excelled in their thrilling 2-2 season-opening draw with Liverpool last Sunday, and is Gonzalez’s most likely midfield partner against Tottenham.
While Newcastle have plenty of young talent in the engine room, Gonzalez gives Newcastle a more experienced defensive midfielder who can instantly become the sixth man in new manager Geisel’s system.
Gonzalez’s efficiency in possession should make him a great asset for Newcastle. Since the Spaniard made his Premier League debut for City in February last year, only former team-mate Rodri (87) has made more successful passes per 90 minutes in the division than Gonzalez (68), according to Opta.
Newcastle still hopes to add more to its ranks before the transfer deadline on September 1. Their next signing is likely to be a striker, with Lille’s Mathias Fernandez Pardew and Stuttgart’s Bilal Elkhnous believed to be among their targets.
