Christian Romero has bid an emotional farewell to Tottenham after admitting he “wasn’t perfect” during his five years in north London.
The Argentina international is closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid after the Spanish club agreed a £34.2m deal for the centre-back.
Romero has not played for Tottenham since suffering a knee injury against Sunderland last April. The defender appeared clearly affected when he left the field, as the injury kept him out of the last six matches Premier League Campaign matches.
His absence came during Spurs’ relegation battle, and also sparked criticism from some fans after he initially planned to return to Argentina for the Serie A final in Belgrano before Spurs’ crucial final game of the season.
Romero eventually remained in England and was present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Tottenham secured survival in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Everton, moving them to 17th place for the second year in a row.
In a farewell message posted on social media, Romero spoke about his time at the club.
“I know I wasn’t perfect,” he wrote.
“But I can leave knowing that I always gave it my all. I wore this shirt with pride and fought for it with all my heart.”
“When I arrived, I had one goal: to leave my mark on this club,” Romero added.
“I knew it could only happen through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something people had been waiting for for a long time – winning the title. Together, we were able to achieve it.
“I will leave Tottenham, but part of me will always be here. I came here as a player and I will leave feeling like one of you.
“Thank you for everything.”
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and established himself as one of the club’s key defenders, making 156 appearances in all competitions.
The highlight of his spell came in 2025 when he helped Tottenham end their 17-year wait for silverware by beating Manchester United in the Europa League final.
