Rescuers were on high alert in anticipation of further flooding in a new lake that formed high in the Himalayas after the initial floods on Wednesday. Experts warned that the lake, which was formed after the collapse of a glacier caused floods, had begun to overflow.
The Nepalese Army has been deployed to help rescue more than 100 people believed to be trapped inside a tunnel at a hydroelectric power station located in the worst-hit region of the country. As elsewhere in the disaster area, their work was complicated by the thick layers of mud that covered the site.
The Chinese Central Broadcasting Corporation said that the rescue team descended from the wooded mountain slopes to the border crossing area, which was bustling with activity.
“As far as I could see, there was only debris,” rescue official Zhou Mingke told state media. The area where travelers passed through border control to enter or leave China has been flattened into a muddy area, according to satellite images.
