Defending champions Bayern Munich got their German Cup win off to a winning start thanks to Harry Kane’s goal in a 4-1 win over second-tier Osnabrück.
Kane, who scored a hat-trick when Bayern won the cup final against Stuttgart last May, equalized for the team with his first goal of the season after Robin Meisner gave the home team a surprise lead.
Tom Bischoff put Bayern ahead before halftime and Michael Olise added a third goal in the second half before Kane scored a late penalty.
Jamal Musiala was not included in Bayern’s squad, as the German star has been absent since he collapsed in two preparatory matches for the new season due to a neurological problem.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said Musiala “may” be an option in Bayern’s league match against newly promoted Schalke on Saturday.
“But I don’t want to put more pressure on the guy,” Kompany said.
The hosts stunned the defending champions within five minutes. A long clearance caused confusion in Bayern’s backline and Messner broke free and fired a bold first-time shot into the top corner past Jonas Orbig, igniting the home crowd.
Bayern responded 20 minutes earlier via a familiar source. Joshua Kimmich sent a precise ball over the top into the penalty area, forcing Robin Fabinski to awkwardly head the ball away as it popped into the air. Kane reacted immediately, firing a powerful shot into the back net to equalise. The strike saw Kane equal the club record by scoring in his seventh successive DFB Cup match.
Young midfielder Bischoff followed when goalkeeper Jonas Kromrey blocked Luis Diaz’s initial shot, and Olise got a third after second-half substitute Lennart Karl pounced on a loose pass to pull him clear.
Kane then buried a penalty four minutes from time before being substituted.
Bayern have won the German Cup on 21 occasions, but had not achieved a win for six years before last season’s triumph.
